Digital Signature Certificate

Digital Signature- means authentication of any electronic record by a subscriber by means of an electronic method or procedure in accordance with the provisions of section 3 of Information Technology Act, 2008.

Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) are the digital equivalent (that is electronic format) of physical or paper certificates. Examples are drivers’ licenses, passports or membership cards.

Why DSC?

Physical documents are signed manually, similarly, electronic documents, for example, e-forms are required to be signed digitally using a Digital Signature Certificate.

Digital Signatures Certificate has only one category i.e. Class III Digital Signature:
  • Used for Company or LLP Incorporation, IT Return E-Filing, Obtaining DIN or DPIN, and filing other forms with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Income Tax Department, E-Tendering e-procurement, e-bidding or e-ticketing for Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC), Indian Railways (IREPS), Directorate General of Supplies & Disposals (DGSND), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Oil India Limited (OIL), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Water Resource Department, Patent and Trade Mark Registration, Air India etc.
Application

DSC applicant can directly approach Certifying Authorities along with original and self-attested supporting documents. Documents should be notarized and apposite led which may vary from case to case.

Required documents and Information are-

  • For Indian Nationals- Copy of PAN Card and Aadhaar Card;
  • For Foreign Nationals- Copy of Passport and any other proof of residence, if required;
  • For OCI holders- Copy of OCI and Passport
  • Along with Passport Size Color Photograph, Active e-mail id and mobile number.
How much time required to issue a DSC?

The time generally taken by certifying authority to issue DSC may vary from 3-6 hours subject to the availability of the applicant.

Validity of DSC

The certifying authorities are authorized to issue a Digital Signature Certificate with a validity of one, two or three years, you can select the same at the time of application.

Note
